The Australian Communications and Media Authority has extended the consultation period on proposed changes to the procedures it uses to assess requests to file satellite systems with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The ACMA assesses requests to file satellite systems with the ITU in accordance with the Australian procedures for the coordination and notification of satellite systems. The procedures were last updated in 2011 and the ACMA is proposing changes to improve their clarity and readability, as well as ensure the procedures are more reflective of the current regulatory environment and industry practices.
The consultation paper outlines the proposed changes. The paper also explores environmental, policy and regulatory matters that might inform any future changes to the ACMA’s approach to satellite filing and to the licensing of space-based communication systems.
After a number of requests, the ACMA has extended the closing date for the consultation by one week, from Wednesday 11 October to COB, Wednesday 18 October 2023.
