ACMA Info Pack for 3.8 GHz Band Area-Wide-Licences

The Australian Commuunications and Media Authority has published an applicant information pack (AIP) for those interested in applying for area-wide licences (AWLs) in the 3.8 GHz band.

The ACMA will be issuing AWLs in the following frequency ranges and areas:

  • 3800–3950 MHz in metropolitan and regional areas, and AWL receive licences in 3800–4000 MHz
  • 3750–3950 MHz in rural areas, and AWL receive licences in 3750–4000 MHz.

The AIP includes the relevant legislative and technical instruments, key dates and information on how to lodge an application.

AWLs are service and technology-flexible, and scalable to different network sizes and topographies. This flexibility allows licensees to roll out networks suitable for relevant business and organisations. This makes AWLs appropriate for small, localised services.

The ACMA anticipates that the AWLs issued in this allocation will support a wide range of innovative business cases, including:

  • broadband services for regional connectivity and 5G technology
  • health and safety applications
  • industrial applications such as autonomous operation and monitoring, robotics and augmented reality.

Applications open Thursday 28 March 2024.
