Australian Department of Parliamentary Services Upgrades with Magna

Magna Systems & Engineering is developing, producing, supplying and installing a significant custom vision mixing solution for the Australian department of Parliamentary Services (DPS). The solution is based on the Grass Valley Korona V Series vision mixers and will be installed in all of the DPS’ eight production control rooms.

The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is the service department for Australia’s national Parliament, providing services and facilities that enable Senators and Members of the House of Representatives to work and communicate with each other, with their constituents and with the community. DPS facilitates the Australian Parliament to the Australian community and to the world.

Magna Systems and Engineering’s relationship as a trusted supplier and systems integrator to Australia’s Federal Parliament House and the Department of Parliamentary Services stretches back over 12 years.

This new project builds on many other projects and installations that Magna has been responsible for at the DPS.

With DPS needing their full suite of vision mixers replacing they issued a full public tender for the project which Magna was successful in winning.

The tender and Magna’s subsequent response was comprehensive and included a new suite of vision mixers and custom control panels integrating with DPS’ existing production systems in 8 master control rooms and including routing, camera robotics, multi-viewers and tallys.

The key and most critical parts of winning this project were the integration with DPS’ current systems and Magna’s ability to develop and produce fully customised hardware that could use the native protocol from Grass Valley in order to control the new vision mixers natively – something vital to DPS’ broadcast operation.

DPS’ new Grass Valley Korona K-Frame V-series systems are specifically designed for low- and mid-range broadcast and media applications and they have purchased multiple 32×16 1 M/E and 2 M/E system packages. The small footprint of the GV Korona K-Frame V-series is ideal for DPS as with its modular design, simple scalability and serviceability, easy handling of SD and HD, the ability to produce in 3G/1080p with no loss of functionality and 4K UHD it is ready for the rigours of parliamentary broadcasting.

As part of the project Magna Systems and Engineering are also re-cabling all of DPS’ vision mixer equipment racks.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2018.
