Australian Museum and Panasonic Create Stunning Sound And Light Display

The 200 Treasures exhibition at the Australian Museum (AM) comes to life through a new spectacular storytelling projection, Treasures Illuminated, in the Westpac Long Gallery daily at 11am and 2pm from 26 November, 2018.

Through the use of dynamic digital projections: history, science and art converge in this free, daily presentation to provide an impressive digital journey into the stories behind the Australian Museum’s 200 Treasures exhibition.

Australian Museum Director and CEO, Kim McKay, AO, said these emerging technologies deliver new opportunities to discover our past in a way no other generation has been able to do.

“The Australian Museum is home to some of the most precious cultural and historic objects from our region. By bringing these treasured stories to light through the use of spectacular projections, we hope it will encourage all visitors to discover what is special about our history,” McKay added.

Treasures Illuminated, presented by Westpac, will look at five core themes inspired and derived from the 200 Treasures exhibition; Earth from Space, South Pacific Ocean, Prehistoric, Beauty of Nature and Human Contribution.

Westpac CEO, Brian Hartzer said, “We are proud to partner with the Australian Museum to present Treasures Illuminated. Offering Australian Museum visitors a striking reimagining of history and culture, we hope these innovative and contemporary projections will heighten the visitor experience and add a dynamic counterpoint to the AM’s 200 Treasures exhibition in the Westpac Long Gallery.”

Lifting the stories ‘off the pages’, narrator Tracey Holmes tells the stories behind these historic treasures providing a glimpse into the realm of museum collections and research.

Visitors will be ushered from the Ground Floor of the Westpac Long Gallery to the balconies of the two floors above. With a birds-eye view of the gallery below, visitors will witness a seven-minute projection using digital animation and 3D mapping, bringing to life the history, breadth and scale of our natural world.

Treasures Illuminated was created by AGB Events, the award-winning team behind the Vivid Sydney light installations, the homage to Sir Joseph Banks, ‘Beauty, Rich and Rare’ at The National Library and Parrtjima – A Festival in Light in the Central Australian Desert among many other projects.

CEO of AGB Events, Anthony Bastic said, “As creators and designers of Treasures Illuminated, we are thrilled by the Australian Museum’s willingness to rethink the museum experience, allowing us to find the stories within the objects and reinterpret them visually.  By connecting the projected animations to the physical display cases, AGB Events has illuminated the historical entanglements and encouraged visitors to explore the collection more deeply.”

The visual experience is driven by multiple Panasonic 3-chip DLP Laser Projectors with Dataton Watchout multi-display software, which are installed within the Westpac Long Gallery rooftop.

General Manager – Media and Entertainment, Panasonic Australia, Peter Huljich, said: “Panasonic is synonymous with reliability and innovation, and we are delighted to bring the fascinating stories in Treasures Illuminated to life. Our latest digital projection technology will give visitors to the 200 Treasures exhibition a truly immersive and unforgettable experience from the moment they walk in.”

Treasures Illuminated is made possible through the generous support of Westpac.
