BAI Upgrades Radio Transmission for Torres Strait Islands

BAI Communications recently upgraded a transmitter that had been broadcasting for nearly three decades on behalf of the Torres Strait Islanders Media Association (TSIMA) operated Radio 4MW on Thursday Island.

BAI completed the replacement of the original 1997 transmitter at Meriba Wakai Radio 4MW 1260AM with a modern Nautel XR3, alongside new program input equipment (PIE), updated program input systems, new studio transmitter link (STL) links and monitoring systems, and the resolution of long-standing faults and persistent hum issues affecting outer island communities.

According to BAI, “The results have been immediate and meaningful. Residents on Saibai Island, approximately 150km from Thursday Island, have already noticed the dramatic improvement in signal clarity.

“Delivering infrastructure in remote and island communities is never straightforward. The BAI team navigated complex logistics, plant hire challenges and had to adapt plans around Tropical Cyclone Maila. Through careful planning, strong relationships and determination, the project was delivered successfully.

“What makes this project stand out is not just the technical outcome, but the community achievement surrounding it. TSIMA’s board and staff are 100 percent Torres Strait Islander, and the broader TSIMA building refurbishment reached a 96 percent Indigenous participation rate, with local Indigenous businesses leading construction works.”

As part of the project, six female job seekers completed a Certificate II in Construction Pathways, with five securing ongoing employment upon completion.
