Hong Kong Extends 5G Subsidy Scheme

Hong Kong’s Commerce and Economic Development Bureau has extended the application period of its Subsidy Scheme for Encouraging Early Deployment of 5G.

Aimed at encouraging more public and private organisations to deploy 5G technology to foster innovation, the deadline for application of the Subsidy Scheme for Encouraging Early Deployment of 5G, which was launched under the Anti-epidemic Fund with a funding of HK$100 million, will be extended for five months to 31 December.

The Scheme subsidises 50 per cent of the costs in a project for the deployment of 5G technology, subject to a cap of HK$500,000 for each project. The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau says that, since its launch in May 2020, there has been enthusiastic response to the Scheme, with 141 applications already approved which cover applications in various aspects and sectors, such as 4K/8K live broadcast of musical performance or sports coaching, remote real-time healthcare system, construction site safety monitoring system, remote mechanical maintenance, etc.

“With its edge of high speed, low latency, high capacity and massive connectivity, 5G provides enormous development potential for different business services and smart city applications. The Scheme aims to encourage early deployment of 5G in various industries, thereby enhancing efficiency, productivity, and quality of their services,” a Government spokesman said.

Details of the Scheme and the application form are available on the website of the Office of the Communications Authority. Email 5g-subsidy@ofca.gov.hk
