Malaysia at Forefront of 5G in Southeast Asia

Malaysia is set to add USD 3.12 million (RM 12.7 million) to its GDP by 2025 with the implementation of 5G with 39,000 new jobs. Led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Malaysia has demonstrated 72 use cases involving 9 industry verticals at 56 live sites with a total investment of USD 35.16 million (RM 143 million) from the industry players.

MCMC recently hosted the first 5G Malaysia International Conference featuring world renowned speakers and industry leaders such as Tareq Amin of Rakuten Mobile, Sameer Sharma of ITU and Julian Gorman of Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA). The conference delved into 5G potential as a catalyst for Sustainable Development goals, digital inclusivity, the global roadmap for the technology and beyond.

In his opening remarks, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, YB Gobind Singh Deo (pictured), said 5G will allow Malaysia to produce and manufacture more high-quality goods and services while further benefiting the people with better products and services.

“Recognising its potential, the government of Malaysia through the MCMC is leading the way by proactively taking the necessary steps to develop this new and emerging ecosystem,” the Minister added.
