Nine Sells Weatherzone Service to US-based DTN

Weather and financial analytics provider DTN has acquired Weatherzone, from Nine Entertainment. Weatherzone is a leading provider of weather information to consumers and businesses across major industry sectors.

Established in 1998, Weatherzone is Australia’s largest private weather service. Nine inherited the ownership of Weatherzone following the merger of Fairfax Media and Nine in December 2018.

“Today we are excited to bring Weatherzone to DTN and expand our business in Australia,” said Steve Matthesen, DTN CEO. “Weatherzone has a great team, dedicated to serving consumers and clients with the best weather information and insights available. We look forward to working together and leveraging our global technology to continue driving success for our customers. This gives us a truly global footprint across the Americas, Europe, and Asia/Pacific.”

Weatherzone, founded in 1998, is Australia’s most well-known weather brand. Millions of people use the Weatherzone app daily to plan their activities. The company provides hundreds of businesses across the country with industry-leading weather insights. Some of Australia’s largest companies in aviation, mining, energy and utilities rely on Weatherzone every day to keep their business running efficiently and their people safe. Mark Hardy, founder and board member, will rejoin the business as Managing Director and will continue to drive customer value.

“The team at Weatherzone is excited about the opportunity to leverage global technologies and increased investment in weather solutions,” said Hardy. “Working together with DTN will only strengthen both of our organisations and bring together the best weather insights and information available around the world.”

“We are pleased to have successfully completed a deal with DTN for the sale of Nine’s 75 per cent holding in Weatherzone,” said Hugh Marks, CEO of Nine. “This is a mutually beneficial deal which sees us exiting a non-core business in order to focus on Nine’s portfolio of high-growth, digital, consumer-facing assets.

“For the team at Weatherzone it aligns them with a leader in the insights space and allows them to continue to grow and expand their business.”

The price in the transaction remains confidential.
