Optus Taps into Women’s World Cup for Inspiration Grants

Optus, Official Supporter and Optus Sport, the Official Broadcaster in Australia, has announced the details of the Inspiration Grants programme, which saw 13,192 applications. From inspiring screenwriters to careers in STEM and teens looking to help their local disability networks, the Inspiration Grants programme has seen a variety of passions from ambitious applications across the country.

Tapping into the drive of the Matildas to inspire young Australians, 13-19 year-olds had the chance to apply for one of 64 grants, valued at AUD $3,000 each. The programme saw a huge response from the sporting community with volleyball, cricket, gymnastics, swimming, and football dreams across capital cities and regional areas. Applications included aspiring Olympians, Paralympians, and World Champions who seek support to represent Australia on the global stage.

With the Inspiration Grants Programme, Optus says it is taking a bold step forward to make a lasting impact beyond the tournament. The campaign, which focused on mass and social media, utilised 64 content creators from wildly different fields – comedians to sports stars, florists to stunt performers, teachers, and even Formula 1 drivers – to share one thing they wished they’d had known at a young age to help turn their dreams into reality.

TikTok creators included:

  • Scotty James
  • Ben Stubbs
  • Jenna with the Pink
  • Emily Grosser

Matt Williams, Optus Managing Director, said, “We were deeply inspired by the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 and are so proud of the Matildas players who competed. These grants are our way of amplifying that inspiration and ensuring its lasting impact.”

“We’ve been able to create a groundswell of enthusiasm and were overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of applications. This programme seeks to empower the Australian teenagers who embody the spirit of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 through their dreams and passions,” added Matt.

Matildas Vice-Captain and Optus Ambassador, Steph Catley, said, “I believe that with hard work, dedication, and a passion for what you do, anything is possible. The Optus Inspiration Grants Programme provides a wonderful opportunity for individuals to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact within their community. I’m excited to see the incredible journeys and witness the impact on the next generation that will be fuelled by these grants.”
