Philippines’ Embattled ABS-CBN Network Secures Some Airtime

After months of being off-air and no sign of a new franchise to broadcast, the Philippines’ ABS-CBN network has secured an agreement with with Zoe Broadcasting Network Inc to distribute some of its content via Zoe’s newly rebranded A2Z channel 11.

ZOE Broadcasting Network, Inc. (ZOE TV) is a Philippine broadcast media arm of the Jesus Is Lord Church. Based in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, it operates a set of television and radio stations each in Mega Manila and Puerto Princesa City as well as channel 11 in Metro Manila

A2Z channel 11 will be seen on analogue TV in Metro Manila and parts of Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, and Pampanga. It will also be available on cable and satellite TV operators nationwide.

ABS-CBN and Zoe say they are committed to work together to provide entertainment, public service programs, and educational content to the public.

The agreement follows a pivot by ABS-CBN to bring more of its content to the digital space by streaming live and on-demand programmes via its Facebook and YouTube accounts, which have over 50 million followers and subscribers combined.

On Friday, July 10, the Philippines House of Representatives voted to permanently shut down ABS-CBN’s free television and radio services. That vote followed a cease-and-desist order on May 5 by the country’s media regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission, that shut down ABS-CBN’s 42 television stations, 10 digital broadcast channels, 18 FM stations and five AM stations across the Philippines, serving a population of more than 108 million.

ABS-CBN has been fighting to retain its broadcasting rights for some time after the NTC refused to renew its 25-year franchise licence in February.
