Samsung TV Plus FAST Surpasses 100 Channels in NZ

Samsung TV Plus, Samsung’s free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) service, has surpassed 100 channels in New Zealand; a three-fold channel increase following its launch in 2022. Monthly active viewing time soared 96% across Samsung Smart TVs over the last 12 months, and audiences have streamed over 12 million hours.

The launch of 30 new premium channels over the last year alone has fuelled audience growth, tipping the number of hours spent watching the FAST service over a million each month. ‘Bingeable’ and owned-and-operated (O&O) formats have consistently made up the top ten most-watched channels during 2024. Shark Tank and The Wicked Tuna Channel are among the long-time fan favourites, while the nostalgic Throwback TV channel, featuring nineties and noughties TV series, is consistently one of the top three channels. FAST services continue to gain momentum in NZ with Statista predicting almost one in three Kiwis (29%) will watch FAST services by 2027 generating a market volume of over US $7 million.

The latest FAST channels to arrive on Samsung TV Plus taking the platform over the milestone, include McLeods Daughters – the first dedicated binge channel for this content in New Zealand – Unsolved Mysteries and Hot Ones. Launched in 2022, Samsung TV Plus has steadily expanded its reach and content offering across news, sports, entertainment, lifestyle, music, movies and more, making it easier for audiences to discover and access quality free content.

A recent Magnite study revealed ad-supported streaming is gaining momentum in New Zealand with 65% of TV viewers tuning in to ad-supported streaming services. On Samsung Smart TVs, three quarters of New Zealand households spend time in streaming environments, while one third of households watch no linear TV at all.

Cameron Crain, Product Manager Samsung TV Plus ANZ, said: “Free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) still remains one of the newest kids on the block. We are continuing to evolve the viewing experience, and our new user-friendly design is aimed at making it easier for viewers to discover content sooner. Coupled with our extensive library we have seen a major uptick in engagement with monthly active users up 21% in the last year alone”.

As more audiences move to ad-supported environments our commitment to bringing premium and quality content first-to-FAST will only increase.”

Alex Spurzem, General Manager Samsung Ads ANZ, added: “Reaching this milestone is significant because it reinforces the consumer appetite for free streaming content in exchange for ads. As audiences grow at pace it is opening up new and effective ways for brands to reach audiences on the big screen in streaming environments in a cost-efficient manner”.
