$1 Invested in Community Broadcasting = $7.59 in Social Value

Community broadcasting creates significant value for communities across Australia, and new research puts a figure on that impact.

The new Social Return on Investment in Community Broadcasting report finds that $63.9 million invested in the community broadcasters included in the research creates an estimated $485.4 million in social value. On a conservative basis, that’s $7.59 in social value for every $1 invested, with the research modelling a potential return of up to $10.15.

The research also outlines the impact behind those numbers. Community broadcasting helps listeners feel represented and connected, improves mental wellbeing, reduces isolation and supports participation in civic life. Listeners receive the greatest share of the social value identified by the research.

This is powerful evidence of what our sector contributes to Australia, and a story worth sharing.

Read the research, then share the good news with your listeners, supporters, current and potential sponsors, local MPs and other stakeholders. It’s a valuable new way to communicate the value of your work and the importance of supporting community broadcasting.

The research was led by Christian Media and Arts Australia (CMAA) in partnership with Disability Media Australia (DMA), Multicultural Voices Australia (MVA), formerly the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters’ Council (NEMBC), and First Nations Media Australia (FNMA).

The project was part-funded by the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF) alongside philanthropic support secured by CMAA, with project support from the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA).

The independent SROI evaluation was conducted by Think Impact.
